Morenci voters have been very supportive of bond issues in recent years, and we hope that continues with the vote coming May 7. In a way, this is an easy one because it won’t increase taxes a cent. We realize there are many, many voters who don’t see it that way. They want a tax cut and they will vote against the request.
In between are the district residents who are still wavering, those who aren’t yet convinced the school is in need of their hard-earned wages. We urge those people to attend one of the facilities walk-throughs next week and get a first-hand look at what’s needed.
Reading a list of problems and needs doesn’t always convey the urgency, and taken separately, they might not appear all that important. The problem is that there’s little cash to make repairs. The maintenance crew has stayed on top of roof problems—there aren’t troublesome leaks in the media center or the gymnasium, as in the past—but failure to property address the problems will only make things worse, and more expensive. There are so many needs, both big and small, that add up to a very expensive venture.
Aside from the middle school, Morenci’s facilities are far from new. They still appear in overall good shape, but they are many decades old and need of good care.
Take tour and see what’s needed. We hope then you will get off the fence and decide to cast a “yes” vote on May 7.
