What is going on? Is it the cold air? The prospect of fall coming that is making me so hungry for pound-producing foods? I don’t know what it is, but I sure have a yen for baked goods lately—heck, any goods...I just can’t seem to get enough to eat.
Just the other night, I lamented to David, “I want something I shouldn’t eat.”
“Oh, like turpentine?” he said.
I was thinking more along the lines of something sweet, something baked, something extraneous that would taste good even though it would just add waist to my line.
David and I both felt something was missing after dinner Monday night. He had sauteed fish in a fabulous tamari and balsamic vinegar sauce and I had eaten a big bowl of leftover curried vegetables with two slices of bread. I was already on my third slice of bread alongside the fish and still looking forward to my next course.
“I need something else,” I said.
“Good luck,” he said.
David had already started scrounging around for something else and was coming up short.
“Oh, I know what I’m going to eat next,” I said as I finished up my fish.
I recall being quite excited by the prospect of what I was next going to consume. And then it slipped my mind. I moseyed around the kitchen peeking into cupboards, opening and closing the fridge and still my memory wasn’t jogged.
And then, I just wasn’t as hungry anymore. I was more tired than anything and began looking forward to a nap instead. It was that food axiom in action. Eat until you’re 80% full and you won’t overeat. The problem is, I never know when I’m at 80% so I usually keep right on eating—until I reach just this side of bloat.
Food seems to be my focus lately. My mind wanders to restaurants, where to eat next week when I go to Lansing for the rally against Governor Granholm’s executive order to dismantle the Library of Michigan and the additional proposed cut in state aid for libraries.
The state has been reducing its allocation to libraries for years and now the Senate wants to reduce it even further—so low that the state would lose matching federal funds that support MeLCat, the statewide inter-library loan system and the MeL databases that provide access to accurate information and and include wonderful resources such as free practice tests for the ACT, GRE, career tests through Learning Express Library, and the Chilton Library which gives auto repair info for many vehicles.
I should be thinking about what to write on a sign and whether I’ll visit Sen. Cameron Brown or Dudley Spade’s office but instead I’m thinking, El Azteco’s enchiladas de Jocoque or Woody’s Oasis for felafel? Or maybe I should try a new restaurant?
The rally to protest the cuts and the Governor’s order to empty the Library of Michigan building and put in a Center for Innovation and Reinvention is scheduled next Thursday, Sept. 10, at 9:30 a.m., and I should be writing a letter to the editor.
But, instead, I’m searching for food.
“That’s what I was going to eat!” I exclaimed the fourth time I opened the fridge looking for something to munch on before heading down to the Observer Monday night.
I’d been inhaling Doritos that Maddie had brought home and knew I had to stop. I convinced myself I wasn’t really stealing her Doritos, I was just eating the part of the bag that read “Whoa! There’s 20% More Free Bold Bites In Here!”
It was feta cubes marinated in lemon-olive oil dressing. I’d made them Sunday night for tonight’s photography program at the library. (Hear Alan Day and Charlie Easter talk about the story behind the photo at 6 p.m.) I’d made a double batch so I figured I could spare some for a snack.
But I was pretty sure I’d eaten the 20% free part of the bag of Doritos and knew I should quit. Besides, marinated feta cubes are best with bread and I’d already eaten three slices.
I’m pretending all this extra eating will fortify me for the rally. A carpool will leave Sept. 10 from behind the library at 7:45 a.m....sign up at the library if you want to participate.
