I feel compelled to write and get folks talking.
This past week there was a story in the national press about a 10-year-old girl who needs a lung transplant. Her parents are working hard to circumvent the system and get her transplant, no matter what.
I am a transplant recipient. I received a liver transplant April 20, 2012. I am well aware how the systems work. There are a lot of professionals that take their time and expertise to make the system as fair as possible. They do not take this responsibility lightly. The real issue here is that there are not enough donors.
Everyone needs to think about how they feel about organ donation so if, God forbid, they are faced with having to decide to donate or not, they already know what that decision is. If you decide to donate and are not registered, please go to www.organdonor.gov. One donor saves eight lives and helps 50 others through tissue donation.
By the way, I’m alive and well this year because someone donated their organs. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be here to write to you.
