Helen Bovee, 83, of Wakefield Dr., Morenci, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006, at home. She was born Aug. 23, 1923, in Macon Twp., the daughter of Carroll and Marie (Scharer) Rathbun.  On May 11, 1943, she married Keith Bovee in Clayton.  He preceded her in death Aug. 22, 1982.

 

Helen was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Morenci, former Chesterfield Township Clerk and Evergreen Schools secretary and cook.  She enjoyed reading, playing the piano and watching sports, especially the Detroit Tigers.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol (and Alan) Pummell of Morenci and Kathy (and David) Selman of Adrian; three sons, Brian (and Janet) Bovee and Barry (and Linda) Bovee, both of Adrian, and Forrest "Fred" (and Bev) Bovee of Morenci; one brother, Walter "Keith" (and Betty) Rathbun of Weston; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and dear friend, Carolyn Wilsberg.

Besides her husband, Keith, Helen was preceded in death by her parents.

The funeral service is planned Sunday, Nov. 26, 2006, at 2 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home-Charles Fink Chapel in Morenci with Rev. Jack Cahill officiating. Burial will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Morenci.  Visitation is scheduled Saturday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Morenci Congregational Church or the Stair Public Library.

    BIKE-A-THON—Children in Morenci’s Summer Recreation Program brought their bikes last Tuesday to participate in a bike-a-thon. Riders await the start of the event at the elementary school before being led on a course through town by organizer Leonie Leahy.

    on your mark, get set, drum!—Drew Joughin (black shirt), Maddox Joughin and Kaleea Braun took the front row last week when Angela Rettle and assistants led the Stair District Library Summer Reading Program kids in a session of cardio drumming. The sports and healthy living theme continued yesterday with a Mini Jamboree at Lake Hudson State Park arranged by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Next week’s program features the Flying Aces Frisbee show.

    ART PARK—A design created by Poggemeyer Design Group shows a “pocket art park” in the green space south of the State Line Observer building. The proposal includes a 12-foot sculpture based on a design created by Morenci sixth grade student Klara Wesley through a school and library collaboration. A wooden band shell is located at the back of the lot. The Observer wall would be covered with a synthetic stucco material. City council members are considering ways to fund the estimated $125,000 project and perhaps tackling construction one step at a time.
