Virginia Shoemaker, 84, of Morenci, Mich., died March 6, 2011, at her home with her daughter and family, in Tecumseh, Mich.
She was born Oct. 10, 1926, in Warren, Ohio, to Scott and Shirley (Shaw) Willet. On Oct. 16, 1944, Virginia married William Duane Shoemaker in Weston, Mich. He preceded her in death Oct. 24, 2004, after 60 years of marriage.
Virginia was employed as a youth specialist with the Adrian Training School for 13 years, retiring in 1972. She was an avid gardener and served as a columnist for the Morenci Observer for 26 years. She also served on the Morenci City Council.
Surviving Virginia are three sons, William (and Mickey) Shoemaker, Jr., of Concord, N.H., Thomas (and Beth) Shoemaker of Pensacola, Fla., and Nick (and Cheryl) Shoemaker of Adrian, Mich.; two daughters, Linda Crow of Toledo, and Judith (and Gary) Hicks of Tecumseh; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Margaret, Audrey, Marian and Marilyn; and two brothers, Scott and Russell.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service and celebration of Virginia’s life is planned from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at Milestones, 139 W. Main St., Morenci.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Morenci Tree Planting Fund, Morenci’s Stair Public Library or Morenci’s Little Garden Club. Arrangements are under the direction of the Tecumseh Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Home.
