Eleanor K. Pilbeam, 74, of LaGrange Street, Morenci, Mich., died Jan. 1, 2006 at Toledo Hospital.

She was born April 12, 1931 in Morenci, the daughter of Harold and Caroline (Heck) Hart. She married LaVern Pilbeam on Oct. 29, 1955 in Angola, Ind. and he survives.

Eleanor was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She lived in the Morenci area most of her life and was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. She and LaVern celebrated 50 years of marriage last year, which brought great joy to the family.

Besides her husband, Eleanor is survived by two daughters, Kathy (and Roy) Henricks and Joy (and Galen) Chamberlin, both of Wauseon, Ohio; a son, Mark (and Michelle) Pilbeam of Fayette, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Donelda Potts of Prattville and Louise Godfrey of Wolverine, and two brothers, Russell Hart of Morenci and Harold Hart of Reston, Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Hazel Bear Hunt, and five brothers, David, Richard, Ed, Earl and Donald.

Funeral services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Morenci Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor James Heffner officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Morenci. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lenawee County.

    BIKE-A-THON—Children in Morenci’s Summer Recreation Program brought their bikes last Tuesday to participate in a bike-a-thon. Riders await the start of the event at the elementary school before being led on a course through town by organizer Leonie Leahy.

    on your mark, get set, drum!—Drew Joughin (black shirt), Maddox Joughin and Kaleea Braun took the front row last week when Angela Rettle and assistants led the Stair District Library Summer Reading Program kids in a session of cardio drumming. The sports and healthy living theme continued yesterday with a Mini Jamboree at Lake Hudson State Park arranged by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Next week’s program features the Flying Aces Frisbee show.

    ART PARK—A design created by Poggemeyer Design Group shows a “pocket art park” in the green space south of the State Line Observer building. The proposal includes a 12-foot sculpture based on a design created by Morenci sixth grade student Klara Wesley through a school and library collaboration. A wooden band shell is located at the back of the lot. The Observer wall would be covered with a synthetic stucco material. City council members are considering ways to fund the estimated $125,000 project and perhaps tackling construction one step at a time.
