A Morenci native was honored in Greenville for his "commitment to improving the quality of life for the people in our community."

Morenci graduate Rev. Dr. Jerry Jones was given the Fred and Lina Meijer Spirit of Caring Award in a ceremony last month. He wasn't aware that he was chosen for the award until it was announced at the banquet.

Rev. Jones responded with a prayer in which he stated that Greenville is a community "where caring really matters, where difference-making matters, where selflessness is that which builds an even better community."

Several residents nominated Rev. Jones for the award and he was selected by a unanimous decision. In addition to serving as pastor of the Greenville First Congregational Church, he has been affiliated with Spectrum Health United Quality and Safety Committee, Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Coalition of Montcalm County, Biomedical Ethics Committee, United Lifestyles, North Kent Guidance Services Advisory Committee, and Greenville Public Schools Health Advisory board.

A formal presentation is planned in February at the Many Hearts One Mission Charity Ball at Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park.
