Carol Smith dies in two-car crash 2011.1012

Written by David Green.

A former Morenci Area High School secretary died Thursday in a two-car accident south of Sand Creek.

Arnold Smith was driving north on Sand Creek Highway with his wife, Carol, to attend a granddaughter’s volleyball match when their vehicle was struck by a pickup truck at the intersection of Packard Road.

The Michigan State Police report states that Brandie Lee Woodruff, 28, of Sand Creek, was driving west on Packard and failed to stop at the intersection. The accident was reported at 4:50 p.m.

Carol Smith was pronounced dead at the scene, while her husband and Woodruff were taken by ambulance to ProMedica Bixby Hospital. Arnold Smith was then transported by medical helicopter to a Toledo hospital due to concern about internal injuries, but he was released from the hospital late Friday.

Carol helped shepherd hundreds of Morenci students through high school as the office secretary for more than 30 years. In October 2004, the school office was named in her honor. The sign Carol Smith Office hangs over the entrance door.
