Dwight Mansfield won't seek another school board term 01.26.2011

Morenci will have at least one new board of education member after the annual May 3 election. Veteran board member Dwight Mansfield has decided not to seek another term.

The terms of Mansfield and Ivy Hutchison are both expiring this year and Hutchison said she intends to file for another term.

Any school district resident interested in serving a four-year term on the board has until 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, to return a nominating petition with the signatures of registered voters. Petitions are available at Morenci city hall on Orchard Street.

School district residents have until April 4 to register to vote in the election. The deadline for write-in candidates to file is April 29 and the deadline to apply for an absentee ballot by mail is April 30.

Mansfield will retire from the board after 20 years of service.

“It’s had its tough moments,” he said, “but I’m thankful people have allowed me to serve that long.”

Now, he said, it’s time for someone else to step up and take a turn.

The proposal includes a 12-foot sculpture based on a design created by Morenci sixth grade student Klara Wesley through a school and library collaboration. A wooden band shell is located at the back of the lot. The Observer wall would be covered with a synthetic stucco material. City council members are considering ways to fund the estimated $125,000 project and perhaps tackling construction one step at a time.
