Donald J. Becannen, 81, formerly of Lenawee County, Mich., died June 17, 2006 at Grace Living Center in Edmond, Okla.

He was born Jan. 9, 1925 in Morenci, Mich., to Jerome and Nina (Benfield) Becannen, On Nov. 16, 1946 he married Phyllis Mae Jacobs in Morenci, and she preceded him in death on June 9, 1999.

Don graduated from Morenci High School in 1942. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran of the European Theater. He was employed by General Motors as a quality control manager. After retiring, he moved to Edmond, Okla., where he lived for the past 10 years.

Don is survived by one son, Mark Becannen of Edmond, Okla.; one daughter, Julie Thonnissen of Morenci; four grandsons, Jacob Becannen and Daniel Becannen of Oklahoma, Joshua Thonnissen of Gulfport, Miss. and Michael Thonnissen of Morenci; one granddaughter, Amy Thonnissen of Morenci; two great-grandchildren, Nathaniel and Chloe Becannen; and one sister, Virginia Borton of Morenci.

Besides his wife, Don was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Barry Becannen, and one sister, Florence Weiderkehr.

Funeral services are scheduled at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Morenci with Rev. Brian Wonn officiating. Military interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Morenci. Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Eagle Funeral Home-Charles Fink Chapel in Morenci.

    TAKE A BREAK—Last Wednesday’s session of Stair District Library’s Summer Reading Program ended with a quiet period in a class presented by yoga instructor Melany Gladieux of Toledo. Children learned a variety of yoga poses in the main room at the library, then finished off the session relaxing. Additional photos are on page 7.     THE DERBY—Tyler “Smallpox” Flakne of Minnesota’s Home Run League All-Stars goes for the fence Friday night during the National Wiffle League Association’s home run derby in Morenci. This year the wiffleball national tournament moved from Dublin, Ohio, to Morenci’s Wakefield Park. During the derby, competitors had two minutes to hit as many home runs as possible.     LINED UP—Lengths of pipe were put in place last week along the route of the Rover natural gas pipeline that will stretch from Defiance, Ohio, to Ontario, Canada. Topsoil was removed before the pipes were laid out. The 42-inch diameter pipeline is scheduled for completion in November.
