Alcohol sting 1.6.2010

Written by David Green.

Eight Fulton County stores were issued citations following compliance checks conducted between Oct. 24 and Dec. 12. U.S. 20 Main Stop south of Morenci was among those cited.

In conjunction with the Partnership for a Drug-Free Fulton County, the Ohio Investigative Unit, a division of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, completed a series of alcohol compliance checks of 29 retailers with liquor licenses in Fulton County. In 21 stores, minors were denied the sale of alcohol.

During the checks, a trained informant under the age of 21 attempts to purchase alcohol while an officer waits in an outside area away from view of those inside the store. The purpose of the checks is to ensure that local retailers with liquor licenses are requiring proper identification and selling alcohol only to those age 21 and older, in compliance with the law.

As part of the citation, the employees making the sale were also charged with sale and/or furnishing alcohol to a person under 21.

In addition to the alcohol compliance checks, the Ohio Investigative Unit (OIU) conducted a similar check of retailers who sell tobacco to ensure that they are compliant with Ohio laws prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to youth under age 18. Five businesses were checked, all of whom were compliant.

“We want to work with permit establishments to make sure that they understand the laws to keep our residents safe,” said Raymond Rodriguez, OIU Agent-In-Charge and member of the Partnership.

The OIU offered the Alcohol Server Knowledge (ASK) Program twice in the past year to Fulton County liquor establishments. The ASK training provides instruction on laws pertaining to the sale and/or consumption of alcohol, false identification and penalties for those found in violation.

“Eighty-two employees of Fulton County retailers have participated in the program this year, which is a credit to our community,” Rodriguez said, “I don’t believe any business owner wants to see their employees provide alcohol to minors. The ASK program gives retailers the skills they need to obey the laws and keep our kids safer.”

According to Sharon Morr, Chairman of the Partnership, “The goal of these checks is to deter underage drinking and tobacco use. We are grateful to those businesses who did not sell alcohol or tobacco to minors during this last round of compliance checks, and for their commitment to the well-being of our young people.”
