Morenci city council: discussion about maintenance 2009.09.30

The city puts a lot of attention on rental units, but what about all the resident-owned homes?

That’s a question resident Nancy Schang asked city council members Monday, suggesting it was time to hand out fines to homeowners who aren’t following regulations.

Residential building inspector Kevin Arquette said that a list of property maintenance violators was compiled, but then a committee put a halt to enforcement.

Arquette said some people said they would be forced to choose between buying prescriptions and painting their house.

“Does it cost anything to pick up trash?” asked audience member Delite Gillen.

Arquette said the city is still looking at littering issues and complaints are almost always addressed the same day.

“We rely on you to tell us what’s on back yards,” said city clerk/administrator Renée Schroeder. “We can’t always see it.”

Assistant clerk Diane Varga said problems often arise because houses are in foreclosure and there’s no one to take responsibility.
