The hermit and the writer meet in a small Swedish village. As their friendship grows, they discover they’re serving as each other’s inspiration.
“Astrid and Veronika” was chosen for the September book discussion at Stair Public Library. The informal group will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 21 in the Liz Stella Annex.
Linda Olsson’s novel introduces the elderly recluse, Astrid, and the worldly 31-year-old Veronika who has chosen to retreat to a secluded home in the countryside. They have dissimilar backgrounds and each has her own reason for distancing herself from society.
In the short time they spend together, they rediscover their humanity and develop better connections with their pasts and with the world around them.
Before they part for the final time, the women give each other the most personal gift that each could offer.
• Extra copies of the book are available at the library. Everyone is welcome to join in the discussion or listen in as others talk about the story.
