Morenci Garden Club 7.22.09

Written by David Green.

The Morenci Garden Club chose the property of Ramiro and Jeri Sanchez on Coomer Street as Garden of the Month for June. Ray and Cheryl Cowgill’s unique rooftop garden, at the corner of Main and Orchard streets, is July’s Garden of the Month.

During the July 14 meeting, club president Betsy Smith presented Lorene Whitehouse with a plaque in honor of Morenci Garden Club’s 55th  anniversary. Lorene is one of the club’s founding members. A gardening book was also purchased and donated to Stair Public Library in memory of Lorene’s husband, Dr. Keith Whitehouse.

The club recently welcomed new members Anita Prats and Annette Nichols.

Club members will visit Schedel Arboretum & Gardens in Elmore, Ohio, on Saturday, Aug. 29. To learn more about the Gardens, visit schedel-gardens.org.  Anyone who would like to attend this garden tour as a guest should contact Sandy at 458-7237 or Renée at 458-7179.

ART PARK—A design created by Poggemeyer Design Group shows a “pocket art park” in the green space south of the State Line Observer building. The proposal includes a 12-foot sculpture based on a design created by Morenci sixth grade student Klara Wesley through a school and library collaboration. A wooden band shell is located at the back of the lot. The Observer wall would be covered with a synthetic stucco material. City council members are considering ways to fund the estimated $125,000 project and perhaps tackling construction one step at a time.
