Morenci book discussion 1.21.09

Written by David Green.

Chris Bohjalian’s twelfth novel, “Skeletons at the Feast,” was chosen for the evening book discussion group at Morenci’s Stair Public Library.

Bohjalian’s historical fiction details the plight of German refugees fleeing westward ahead of the advancing Russian army. His story was inspired by the unpublished diary of a Prussian woman who tells of the difficult journey with her younger children, while her aristocrat husband and older sons are sent into battle.

A Jewish escapee from an Auschwitz-bound train joins the group and becomes their protector.

At the same time, Bohjalian follows the gruesome death march of Nazi women headed west from a concentration camp.

Bohjalian is said to skillfully examine the moral ambiguities of war as right and wrong shift with the changing situations. For many readers, the book provides a look at World War II with which they might not be familiar.

Extra copies of the book are available at the circulation desk. The discussion is scheduled at 7 p.m.  Feb. 16.
