Morenci school board: Two terms expire 1.21.09

Written by David Green.

Two Morenci Board of Education terms expire in June and candidates have until Feb. 10 to file a nominating petition.

Jim Place was appointed to the board in June 2008 to fill a vacancy created when Merton Easler moved out of the school district. Place was appointed to serve on the board through the end of Easler’s term that expires June 30 of this year.

Scott Merillat was first appointed to replace Katie Townsend who resigned in October 2006. He was later elected to fill the remainder of her term that also expires June 30.

Candidates must file a nominating petition at Morenci city hall by 4 p.m. Feb. 10. State law now allows candidates to bypass the need for a petition by paying a nonrefundable filing fee of $100.

Petitions are available at city hall on Orchard Street and at the board of education office on Page Street.

Two candidates will be elected to serve four-year terms on the board. The board generally meets on the first Monday of the month.
