Seneca updating zoning ordinance book 1.30.08

Written by David Green.

You have to expect that things change over a 30-year period, and that’s what prompted the Seneca Township planning commission to overhaul the local zoning ordinance book.

Commissioners have met several times in recent months to read through the document first published in 1977.

Actually, state law now requires a review at least every two years, said commission member Allison Ott. She and member John Gould became Certified Citizen Planners through courses provided by the Extension Service to help prepare for the review process.

A public hearing on the commission’s suggested changes is scheduled at the township board’s Feb. 11 meeting. Township board members will vote in March whether or not to accept the revisions.

When the update is complete and approved, new ordinance books will be published—books that will be easier to understand than the existing form.

For the most part, Ott said, the new version covers corrections, updates and clarifications rather than new additions.
