Two teens injured in accident 8.15

Two teens were injured early Saturday morning in a single-car crash northeast of Morenci.

A sport utility vehicle driven by Lancelott Zimmerman, 19, of Adrian, failed to make the sharp curve while heading east on Weston Road at the Elliott Highway intersection. The vehicle left the road, struck a tree, and rolled over, according to the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident was reported at 5:41 a.m.

Zimmerman’s passenger, Justin Hoffman, 18, of W. Weston Road, Morenci, was transported from the scene by Survival Flight helicopter to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center where he was initially listed in critical condition. Zimmerman was taken to Bixby Medical Center by the Morenci Area EMS.

The accident report indicates that Hoffman was ejected from the vehicle and a mini-keg of beer ended up in the passenger’s seat, apparently caused by the vehicle overturning, said Lt. Cletus Smith.

Alcohol consumption was involved in the accident, he said, and charges are pending.

ART PARK—A design created by Poggemeyer Design Group shows a “pocket art park” in the green space south of the State Line Observer building. The proposal includes a 12-foot sculpture based on a design created by Morenci sixth grade student Klara Wesley through a school and library collaboration. A wooden band shell is located at the back of the lot. The Observer wall would be covered with a synthetic stucco material. City council members are considering ways to fund the estimated $125,000 project and perhaps tackling construction one step at a time.
