There are several unused alleys in Morenci that city council should consider abandoning, says Morenci police chief Larry Weeks.
An example of the problems they can cause was discussed at the council meeting Monday night.
A short alley is platted to run north off W. Congress Street near the northwest corner of North and Congress.
The area has been maintained as a lawn for decades, but when a new business opened nearby on North Street, the old alley was mowed and used for vehicular traffic.
In a discussion among audience members, the question was asked whether the city would be required to maintain the surface and plow it in the winter.
The issue came to council’s attention when Weeks sought permission to post signs at each end of the alley announcing that a deaf child lived in the area. The request for signs was made by the mother of the child.
