The Morenci school district has had more than its share of staff cuts in recent years. Now it’s time for the city to consider trimming back on personnel.
It’s not an issue of large budget deficits for the city, however, explained council member Keith Pennington. Instead, he told councilors Monday, it’s an inability to save any cash for future needs.
That means revenue and spending should come out fairly even, but that, in turn, means the city will be unable to build any fund balance.
A lack of savings puts the city in a dangerous position for two reasons, Pennington said. It leaves no money for unexpected needs, and it also leaves the city short for unexpected opportunities.
