Morenci grass ordinance published 2012.05.02
Morenci city council voted last year to eliminate notification by letter to property owners in violation of the city’s grass ordinance. Instead, a notice will be published in the State Line Observer once a month over the summer, and the first posting of the notice appears in this week’s paper.
Violation of the law will be an expensive oversight.
The notice explains that if grass and weeds are allowed to grow greater than an average height of eight inches, the city may mow the yard and bill the owner for the cost.
A cutting fee of $200 will be charged, or the actual cost of cutting, whichever is greater. If payment is not made within 30 days, a $50 late fee will be added.
Grass clippings and yard debris can be taken to the back of Wakefield Park, behind the city garage. The entrance is on Chestnut Street off Salisbury Street.
Grass and other yard debris can also be bagged or boxed and placed at the curb for pick-up on the first Monday of each month.
Residents are urged to avoid raking grass clippings into the street. Clippings can clog storm water drains and may contribute to street flooding in a heavy rain.
