Schoolcraft College Jazz Band to perform at Opera House 2011.11.02
Jazz will fill the Opera House at the second concert of the 2011-12 Fayette Artist Series at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, featuring the Schoolcraft College Jazz Band.
Under the direction of Dr. Riccardo Selva, the group promotes the treasury of American art music known as jazz with high-level performances in colleges, churches, clubs, and community venues.
The school’s jazz program has grown significantly since Dr. Selva’s appointment as music director. During the past year, the group stormed Chicago with performances at Northwestern University, the Navy Pier, the Shrine of Our Lady of Pomepeii in Chicago’s “Little Italy,” and The Jazz Showcase, known as Chicago’s premiere jazz venue.
The recent “Up Jumped Spring” concert featured guest artist and lead trumpeter Wayne Bergeron of Los Angeles, who has performed with Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band and Maynard Ferguson, and has recorded extensively in movie and television sound tracks.
The Schoolcraft College Jazz Program offers many opportunities for musical study and growth. The resources available to jazz students include a fully functional recording studio, a multi-media equipped conference center, and a thriving well-rounded musical curriculum. The program is currently seeking instrumentalists and vocalists to audition for the winter semester.
The Fayette Artist Series is one of Ohio’s longest running guest artist series. In its 38 year history, the program has presented a broad variety of performances including folk music, classical ensembles, ethnic dance and children’s theater. All programs are presented on the stage of the Ginnivan Theater in Fayette’s historic 1898 Opera House.
As always, a reception for the artists will follow the event. The Opera House doors will open at 7 p.m.
