Glasgow Organ Series to begin 200.09.08
A decade ago, Don Glasgow restored an 1890s vintage Mason and Hamlin Reed Organ and donated it to the Fayette Arts Council. That restoration and donation led to the creation of the Glasgow Reed Organ Series at the Fayette Opera House.
The Glasgow Series, one of a handful in North America, has steadily evolved over the past 10 years under the leadership of master organ restorer Don Glasgow, with the support of the Fayette Arts Council.
This year’s offerings reflect the continued evolution of the Glasgow Series. With performers traveling to the Opera House from Canada, Pennsylvania and Michigan, the 2011-12 series offers music enthusiasts the opportunity to experience outstanding music in the intimate surroundings of one of Ohio’s remaining authentic Opera Houses.
• Randy Jantzi and Family will present the first concert on Sept. 18. The versatile performer is from Baden, Ontario, and has played the organ since age eight. He has served as a church organist for 27 years. Jantzi not only plays the organ, he also is a collector and restorer of these instruments.
• The second concert of the Glasgow Series is scheduled Nov. 13 and features Mark Herr from Lebanon, Pa.
Herr is both a performer and reed organ enthusiast. In 2009, Herr—with the support of the Lebanon County Historical Society—played a lead role in the organization of a Reed Organ Society conference in his home community.
• The third and final concert of the Glasgow Series will feature the University of Michigan’s carillonneur and director of the Stern Collection of Musical Instruments, Steven Ball and Friends.
In addition to his travels as a concert organist, Ball is widely recognized both for his work as a carillonneur and campanologist—someone who studies bells and bell ringing. He performs and teaches at the university.
All performers in this year’s Glasgow Series not only play reed organs, but also collect and restore these vintage instruments.
All concerts will be presented on Sunday afternoons at 3 p.m.
