Morenci library plans book discussion 02.09.2011
The next book discussion session at Stair Public Library is scheduled at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 21, in the Liz Stella Annex, when the group will discuss Kathryn Stockett’s first novel, “The Help.”
Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan, a young white woman just home from college in 1962 Mississippi, becomes interested in the plight of the black maids that every family has working for them. The budding social activist begins to collect stories of the black women on whom the country club sets rely and mistrust.
The book Skeeter puts together based on their stories of mistreatment, abuse, and the heartbreaks of working in white families' homes is scathing and shocking, bringing pride and hope to the black community while giving Skeeter the courage to break down her personal boundaries and pursue her dreams.
Call the library at 458-6510 during regular hours to reserve a copy. Those who plan to attend the discussion will be given first priority in checking out the book.
