Morenci and Fulton County voters mirrored county and state choices for the most part in last week’s general election, but there were a few exceptions.

Morenci

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer (D) took a slim 261-259 advantage over challenger Tim Walberg (R) in Morenci, but Walberg won throughout the district by a 50-45.4 percent margin.

U.S. Taxpayer’s party candidate Scott Aughney, formerly of Morenci, garnered 13 votes in Morenci and 3,796 overall.

Doug Spade (D) took a 274-267 advantage over Bruce Caswell (R) in Morenci in a bid for state senator, but Caswell won the election by a 64-36 margin. The candidates were close to a tie among all Lenawee County voters.

Nancy Jenkins (R) posted a 57-43 advantage over Harvey Schmidt (D) for state representative, and Jenkins did a little better than that among Morenci voters.

 Robert Hall (R) retained his county commissioner seat by a 63-36 margin against challenger Earl Gilhouse (D). Gilhouse, a former Morenci resident, took 42.5 percent of the Morenci vote.

Township voters strongly supported Cletus Smith (R) in his bid for county commissioner and he won 60-39 against Del Cochrane (D).

Laura Schaedler was elected district court judge, 54-45.6 against John Glaser, although Glaser did a little better in Morenci.

Rick Snyder (R) was elected governor by a 20 percent margin statewide and by 15 percent in Morenci.

The state proposal to call a new constitutional convention failed by a 2-1 margin. The proposal to ban felons from holding certain elected offices passed by a 3-1 margin.

Fulton County

A proposal to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages at the Anchor Bay Carry-Out near Harrison Lake passed by a 56-40 tally, but Sunday sales failed by about the same amount.

A tax levy for the Evergreen school district passed 60-39.

In the first state senate district, Steve Buehrer took a 71-26 victory against challenger Erik Cranmer. In the 74th house race, Bruce Goodwin defeated David Pilliod, 62-33.

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Bob Latta defeated    Caleb Finkenbiner 68-26, and by about the same margin in Fulton County.

U.S. Senate candidate Rob Portman took a 57-39 win against Lee Fisher, and polled 64 percent in Fulton County.

Fulton County voters favored governor candidate John Kasich by a 53-41 margin over incumbent Ted Strickland, but the race went 49-47 statewide.
