Morenci moving to Class D 04.14.10
Morenci’s falling enrollment is finally making an impact on sports tournaments. Starting with tournaments in the fall, the Bulldogs will compete as a Class D team in sports that still use the four-class alignment.
Most sports use a division format and Morenci is already in the smallest division, with the exception of football, but the Bulldogs will drop down to Class D for basketball and volleyball.
Classifications for the upcoming school year are based on a second semester count date, which for MHSAA purposes was Feb. 10. Morenci’s count decreased by 10 from the fall count.
After all the counts are submitted, the 767 tournament-qualified member schools were ranked according to enrollment, and then split as closely into quarters as possible. For 2010-11, there are 192 schools each in Classes A, B and C; and 191 schools in Class D.
Morenci Area High School is still larger than Britton (184) and Deerfield (92), but if those school district residents vote in May to consolidate, Morenci would become the smallest public high school in the county. Among other schools in the area, Morenci (217) is now smaller than Pittsford (221).
Effective with the 2010-11 school year, schools with 967 or more students are in Class A in MHSAA post-season tournament competition. The enrollment limits for Class B are 468 to 966; Class C is 218 to 467; and schools with enrollments of 217 and under are Class D. The breaks decreased 20 students between Classes A and B, and Classes B and C; and 6 students between Classes C and D.
With the new classification breaks, 26 schools move up in class for 2010-11, while 21 schools will move down.
A complete list of school enrollments used to determine classifications for the 2010-11 school year can be found on the Enrollment & Classification page of the MHSAA Website.
