Morenci city council 02.24.2010
The Morenci Town & Country Festival committee is hoping to bring a rodeo back to this summer’s event in June.
Committee member Kori Christle told city council Feb. 8 about a contract the committee was considering with a Hudson-based rodeo organizer.
A $3,500 deposit would be refundable through June 1. The total cost of the rodeo is $6,500.
There’s no other major event planned for this year’s festival, Christle said, and in the past a rodeo attracted many spectators.
Christle said the group is seeking council’s approval before signing the contract.
“I don’t think we’ll have any problem coming up with the deposit,” she said.
In other years, the rodeo brought in about $3,000 at the gate.
Councilors voted 6-0 to support the effort.
GRANT—The Morenci Fire Department received a FEMA grant of $92,500 to buy 18 new SCBA air packs (self-contained breathing apparatus) and 30 new face masks, along with some spare air bottles.
The grant covers 95 percent of the cost, leaving the city’s match at $4,500.
“We’ve worked really hard to get this and we’re excited,” said fire chief Chad Schisler.
MUSTER—Council approved a request for an alcohol permit for the Northwest Ohio Antique Firemen’s Association Muster, scheduled at Wakefield Park in Morenci July 24 and 25.
Department member Steve Meller told councilors last month that alcohol is not served at the event, but participants might bring some containers. He wanted to obtain council’s approval before moving forward with planning.
Meller met with council’s parks committee to discuss where the event would be located and a designated alcohol area was defined, the same as with softball tournaments.
Council approved the permit with a 5-1 vote. Tracy Schell was absent from the meeting and mayor Keith Pennington voted against the motion. Pennington explained that he is not opposed to the event at the park, but he votes against the permits because he would like to see entertainment planned without the need for alcohol.
