Ashley Joughin to join Morenci school staff 8.05.09
By DAVID GREEN
A Morenci graduate will return to the classroom this year to serve as a mathematics teacher.
Ashley (Garrow) Joughin was hired at the Monday board of education meeting as a part-time/full-time Morenci Middle School teacher.
Joughin understands the district’s precarious financial situation, superintendent Kyle Griffith said, and knows that mid-year staff cuts are a possibility.
Schedules are still being juggled for the year, he said, and it’s not yet known if Joughin will start off in a full-time position.
State funding levels are still unclear, he said, and could force the board to cut staff before the next school year ends. Funding is likely to get worse before it shows a recovery, Griffith said.
Joughin completed her student teaching in Morenci and received high recommendations.
LEAVE—A leave of absence request by bus driver Lisa Love was denied by board members. Love requested a year off.
Board member Phil McCaskey said the Personnel Committee was opposed to rehiring a laid-off driver for a year and then laying the person off again.
BIDS—Milk and fuel bids for the 2009-10 school year were approved.
Arps Dairy was chosen to provide half pints of two percent milk at 20 cents, one percent chocolate at 21.5 cents, skim at 19.1 cents and one percent strawberry at 21.5 cents.
Briner Oil Company will provide premium diesel fuel at $1.7135 a gallon. Lightning Quick Gas ’n Go of Morenci will sell regular gasoline at five cents off the posted price plus from one to 11 cents below the local competitor.
ATHLETICS—Revisions to the school athletic handbook were approved. Changes include the following:
• In accordance with state rules, a student who fails to receive credit in more than two classes may not be able to participate in athletics for 90 school days.
• Any student receiving a 59 or below will receive an “F” and will not be able to play the week after the “F,” but the next week of eligibility check they will be able to play in any games during that week. Eligibility is done on Thursdays. Ineligibility starts Monday and ends Sunday.
• In order to practice, an athlete must be in attendance the entire school day unless excused in advance by the administration or has a pre-scheduled doctor or dental excuse. A student will not be able to practice or play in a contest if they leave school to go home during the day and then come back for practice or the contest.
• Revised wording for the Conduct of Athletes: Participation in high school athletics is a privilege. The conduct of athletes both in school and outside of school reflects on the athletes’ team, the athletic program, and the school district. Undesirable conduct and or involvement with the law on or off school grounds, in season or out of season, could result in consequences being administered by the athletic council. These consequences could range from no action taken or to dismissal from athletics for a certain length of time.
