Plans progressing for Morenci school reunion 8.05.09
Plans for Morenci’s all-school reunion are falling into place, says Morenci Education Foundation president Bill Van Valkenburg.
Planning continues for several events scheduled during the Sept. 25-27 weekend.
LETTERMEN—Former members of the Letterman’s Club will be honored during half-time of the homecoming football game against Madison High School.
With other homecoming events scheduled, there won’t be time for individual introductions, but a few club members will be highlighted.
BAND—Alumni band members are invited to join the current high school band to perform the school fight song and the theme song for the weekend, “Thanks for the Memories.” The songs will be played at the football game intermission.
HISTORY—During the day on Saturday, Sept. 26, the Morenci Historical Society building on Main Street (the former Allen Jewelry Store) and Zachel’s one-room schoolhouse north of Morenci will be open, and several Morenci businesses will offer special deals to Morenci school alumni.
DINNER—The catered buffet dinner starts at 5:30 p.m., with registration beginning at 4:30. The meal will feature Swiss steak, Italian chicken, two salads, two vegetables, cheesy potatoes and a variety of cobblers for dessert.
A short program will follow the dinner with John Geisler (Class of 1956) and Jim Whitehouse (Class of 1965) as the featured speakers. The classes of 1984, 1969, 1959 and older will be recognized. The cost of the evening is $20 a person and registrations must be made by Sept. 1. The reunion is open to anyone who attended Morenci Area Schools at any time, whether or not they actually graduated from Morenci.
REGISTRATION—Pamphlets were mailed to more than 3,300 Morenci graduates, however, they were not sent to the graduating classes of 2000-2009.
“Even though we want and encourage newer graduates to attend, we do not have current address for these graduates,” Van Valkenburg explained.
One registration has arrived from Hawaii, Van Valkenburg said.
