Levi Hoffman wins national lifting title 6.17.09
Morenci’s Levi Hoffman didn’t just finish up his high school power lifting career as a champion. He did it as a record-setting champ.
The recent Morenci graduate competed last week in Denver at the national tournament of the USA Power Lifting Association. Hoffman was in the Teen II division (16- and 17-year-olds) for 181 pounds.
He lifted 502 pounds in the squat and 534 in the dead lift. The bench is where he really shined. Hoffman’s 358 pounds set a record for the teen meet, but it also established an American record, the best for his age and weight division in any past competition in the country.
Hoffman’s total of 1,394 pounds also set a new mark for the teen meet.
“That’s a darn good bench record,” said his father and coach, Dan, but he added that Levi’s mark might be in the record book for only a year.
If the 15-year-old lifter who broke the world record competes as a 16-year-old next year, the Hoffman mark will likely be a thing of the past.
Levi maintained a comfortable lead over the other competitors in his weight class, Coach Hoffman said, as he lifted his way to the national title.
