Morenci favors Obama 11.12.08
Voter turnout in Morenci remained low in the recent presidential election, but the city favored a Democratic candidate for what’s believed to be only the fourth time in history.
Fifty-nine percent of Morenci’s registered voters went to the polls last week, slightly better than Medina Township’s 57 percent and less than Seneca Township’s 64 percent. County-wide, 67 percent of eligible voters participated, better than the national 60 percent figure.
Morenci voters favored Barack Obama by a 56-42 percent margin, 519-395. In the townships, Seneca voters supported Obama 289-261 and Medina voters went with John McCain, 294-202. County-wide, Obama won by a 51-46 percent tally.
Congressional Democratic candidate Mark Schauer took a narrow win against incumbent Tim Walberg, but Walberg, a Tipton resident, came out on top in Lenawee County, 49-47 percent. In Morenci, Walberg won 471-405; in Medina Township, 314-160; and in Seneca Township, 307-235.
Dudley Spade was returned to his state house seat with a strong 68-32 percent support county-wide. In Morenci, the margin was 70-30 percent; in Medina, 65-35; and in Seneca, 71-29.
Additional ticket splitting put Jack Welsh (R) into the county sheriff office with a 56-43 percent margin. In Morenci, Welsh defeated Democratic opponent Gail Dotson 62-37 percent; in Medina, 64-35; and in Seneca, 61-38.
Morenci voters favored both of the state proposals on the ballot, and both were approved state-wide. Both measures failed in the townships.
Morenci’s Greg Braun was returned to city council, running unopposed.
The Medina Township road and bridge maintenance millage was easily renewed for another four years, 301-174. The millage brings in about $82,000 annually.
Medina officials ran unopposed: Jim Craig, supervisor; Suzette Burk, clerk; Ruth Ann Mansfield, treasurer; and George Cleghorn and Jack Quigley, trustees.
In Seneca Township, John Gould posted a 325-214 win over Johnathan Klumpp for township supervisor. Marie Meinke survived a write-in campaign for township treasurer with 410 votes. Ninety-nine write-in votes were cast, with Bob Walton filing as a candidate.
Donald Emmons and Chris White were chosen to remain on the board of trustees. The two ran unopposed.
