Fayette voters were willing to split the ticket to help put Barack Obama in the White House, despite the county-wide support for McCain-Palin.

Only 64.5 percent of registered voters went to the polls on election day in Fayette and in Gorham Township. County-wide participation came in at 73 percent.

Voters in the village favored Obama by a 257-233 (51-46 percent) margin and also supported Democrat Richard Cordray for attorney general, 243-196, but in all other offices Fayette voters  favored GOP candidates.

County-wide, McCain took a 53-45 percent edge and Republican Mike Crites won by a 49-46 margin for attorney general, with independent Robert Owens polling the remainder of the votes.

In Gorham Township, McCain took a 58-40 percent edge and Crites won by a smaller margin, 52-42.

Voting on the five state ballot issues in Fayette and the township mirrored county results.

State-wide, Obama finished on top with a 51-47 percent advantage, while Cordray took a 57-37 victory. Bob Latta (R) was returned to Congress by a 64-36 percent margin and Bruce Goodwin (R) will remain as state representative with a 63-37 edge.

In Fayette, Latta won 59-41 percent and Goodwin won 56-44. In Gorham Township, Latta won 73-27 percent and Goodwin won 66-34.

In the only local contested office, incumbent county commissioner Dean Genter (R) took a 60-40 percent victory against Michael VanWagner. Genter finished with 60-40 percent support in Fayette and 69-31 percent in the township.
