Chamber to give away $175 for city's 175th 9.24
A Morenci birthday nearly slipped by unnoticed.
In 1983, a big bash was planned for Morenci’s sesquicentennial when it reached the age of 150. Twenty-five years have passed by already and Morenci has turned 175.
When library director Colleen Leddy recently learned about Hudson’s 175th celebration, she asked city administrator/clerk Renée Schroeder about Morenci’s age. She soon realized a big year was passing by.
The topic was discussed last week at the Morenci Area Chamber of Commerce meeting. Rather than plan a celebration this late in the year, a decision was made to give away some cash.
Entry blanks for a drawing will be published for two weeks in the Observer and the winner will receive $175 in Morenci Money—a special form of cash that must be spent at Chamber of Commerce member businesses. A list of members will be given to the drawing winner.
Entry blanks are also available at United Bank and Trust, First Federal Bank and the Pizza Box. When completed, the forms should be returned to any of those businesses by 3 p.m. Oct. 3.
The drawing is planned at 12:30 p.m. at the Morenci fire hall, in conjunction with the fire department’s 175th anniversary open house.
Participants need not be present at the drawing to win.
