James Gartin talks to Morenci council about economic development 9.10
Economic development remains a top priority in Lenawee County, said James Gartin, new director of the Lenawee Economic Development Corporation (LEDC).
Gartin introduced himself to the Morenci city council Monday night as he continues to meet with all government units in the county.
Gartin listed three components to his new job.
First, in an effort to boost business development and retention, he aims to visit about 150 businesses to get the message out that the LEDC functions as the single source for any economic development need—at no cost to the company.
Second, Gartin will continue to collect information needed to market the strengths of the community and attract new development.
Finally, Gartin described workforce development as the most important factor of all.
“We need a workforce able and willing to do the job,” he said. “It’s a critical factor needed to take businesses forward.”
He’s meeting with school superintendents, the LISD and the colleges to discuss job training.
Councilor Keith Pennington asked if Gartin’s efforts will also include commercial development.
Traditionally, it isn’t part of the effort, Gartin said, but he thinks that’s a mistake.
“If the industrial base grows, commercial will follow,” he said. “I think it’s very important.”
