Three years ago Morenci city council adopted a proposal from the planning commission for the repair, replacement and construction of sidewalks in the city.
Some work was completed while other projects were derailed by lack of funding.
Councilors voted June 9 to tackle the next phase of the long-term project: the farthest east block of Locust Street and Washington Street north of Main Street.
Sidewalks will be repaired where needed and installed where none exist on the south side of Locust Street, from Page Street east, and on both sides of Washington, up to the bus garage on the east side.
Planning commission members chose to focus on the neighborhoods near the schools to provide students with a place to walk safely.
City supervisor Barney Vanderpool will seek bids from at least two contractors to obtain a price for sidewalk installation. The bid price should remain firm through the end of the year.
If a property owner makes arrangements at city hall, the city will share in the cost. That figure was at one time equal to about half the cost.
FIRE DEPARTMENT—Three new members of the Morenci Fire Department were approved: Kyle McClain, Corey Sallows and Trisha Fredrick.
Council approved a change in policy regarding new fire department members. In the past, the police chief was asked to investigate an applicant’s character.
The change would empower city hall staff or council members to use a system provided by the state government to look at an applicant’s background. If an applicant is on probation, employment will not be considered. Employment will also not be considered for two years after a misdemeanor is committed and for five years after a felony.
In addition, all liabilities and requirements of the court proceedings must be complete.
LIBRARY—Council gave its final approval to hire Colleen Leddy as library director effective July 1 now that the contract language is acceptable to both sides.
CRUISER—Council chose the bid from Clift Pontiac among three companies for repair of the police department Tahoe transmission. The cost is $2,223.
CORRESPONDENCE—Council received a letter of support from Scott and Kelly Frey regarding the decision against issuing alcohol permits for softball tournaments.
The deficit reduction plan was accepted by the state treasurer’s office.
An investigator with the state fire marshal’s office said he was pleased with how the fire and police departments handled the recent house fire.
“We’ve got first class departments here and people are noticing,” councilor Tracy Schell said.
