Stan Stong talks about Hawaii Theatre 6.4
A former Morenci resident was recently featured in “Front Row Center,” the bi-monthly publication of the Hawaii Theatre Center of Honolulu, Hawaii.
The article mentions that the Stongs have lived in downtown Honolulu for just three years, but already they’ve appreciated the way the revamped theatre has transformed the area.
“In the time we’ve been here, the Theatre’s neighborhood has changed from a disreputable place to a place we feel safe walking around at night,” Stan said.
The Hawaii Theatre was constructed in 1922 for a variety of entertainment purposes and later was used predominantly for movies. It was closed in 1984, but a group of citizens came together to save the structure from demolition.
Following restoration, the theatre was reopened in 1996 and exterior renovation was completed in 2004.
Stan said he and his wife enjoy the shows, appreciate the variety of restaurants in the area and take advantage of a walk through the formerly deserted area of the downtown.
