Isobar's weather report 6.4
By DAVID GREEN
You don’t need George Isobar to tell you that last month was unusually cool, but he would be delighted to offer a few details.
“Just to point out what could have been,” Isobar said, “a year ago we had three days in the 90s. This year we had three in the 80s, plus five mornings in the 30s.”
Only 10 days out of 31 were above-average in temperature, he said, and six of them came in the first seven days of the month.
“Spring just never really broke through,” Isobar said. “We had a lot more days in the 60s last month than in the 70s. It was a chilly May.”
The high temperature for the month was recorded May 26 at 85°. Two days later the low came, a chilly morning temperature of 36° last Wednesday morning.
According to the data from the Toledo National Weather Service office, the mean temperature for the month came in at 57.5° which is 2.1 below average for May. Last year May was 3.2° higher than normal.
Precipitation was a little more than an inch below normal at 2.74 inches.
“We only had a little more than a third of an inch over the last two weeks of the month,” Isobar said. “Over the long-term, May is the second wettest month of the year, behind June.”
But that’s the long-term average, he says. It’s actually quite variable from year to year. 2004: 8.78 inches. 2005: 1.91 inches. 2006: 5.82 inches. 2007: 2.55 inches.
Isobar recorded three thunderstorms for the month and one incidence of hail, although the hail occurred separate from any of the thunderstorms.
There were no damaging winds nor severe storms in the area.
“As I said before, June is typically the wettest month of the year,” Isobar said. “We seem to be off to a good start with rain Monday night and more coming over the next couple of days.”
We also seem to have shaken off the chilly weather, he added, with the first really hot stuff predicted later in the week.
“We’ll soon be complaining about how hot it is,” Isobar said, “but be careful what you ask for. The record low temperatures for June are in the low 40s and upper 30s, right up through the end of the month.”
