Morenci powerlifters 4.9
In his final opportunity, Morenci’s Kelby Allen got the job accomplished.
The senior competed last weekend at the USA Power Lifting High School Nationals in Kalamazoo and came home a champion.
Allen placed sixth a year ago, just out of the medal awards, but he took third in the 2007 Teen Nationals and claimed a championship this year at the raw state meet.
Competing in the 148-pound class, Allen recorded a squat of 480 pounds, a bench of 259 pounds and a dead lift of 463, for a total score of 1,202.
Five other Morenci lifters earned medals at the event.
Chas Frey took second in the 148-pound junior varsity competition in his first time in the nationals.
After scoring 347 in the squad, the sophomore set a national record in the bench at 270 pounds. That put him into first place, but he was edged in the dead lift event.
Junior Roxanne Shankster placed third in the varsity women’s 114-pound class. Her scores were 265, 132 and 254 for a total of 651.
Shankster set two national records last year when she won the JV division. She was named an alternate for the Sub-Junior World Team.
Naomi Hoffman placed third in the 114-pound junior varsity competition with scores of 209, 105 and 209 for a 523 total. The freshman’s dead lift was a personal best.
Salena Keller earned fourth place in the JV 123-pound class. Her scores were 226, 99 and 254 for a 579 total.
Morenci’s other placer was junior Levi Hoffman, who took fifth in the 181-pound class. Despite his many state and national records and titles, he had a rough day at nationals and finished with his lowest equipped total of the year.
His scores were 496, 314 and 502 for a total of 1,312. He was chosen to join the Sub-Junior World Team, but will have to let the competition in South Africa pass by due to the start of the football season.
Codie Clymer also competed for Morenci. In the 148-pound class, he scored 325, 265 and 408 for a total of 998.
Madison’s Wes McCormick was a national champion in the 1321-pound class.
