Morenci school enrollment declines by only three 10.3
The situation is nothing like a year ago when Morenci school enrollment ended up 19 students below the projected level.
That left the district minus about $135,000 in state aid.
This year, the preliminary student count came in three students below projections, but that figure is still subject to change.
School districts have 10 days after the official count day (Sept. 26 this year) to record additions or subtractions. In some years, a healthy student count day transforms into losses as children leave for another district; other years the number goes up.
The fall count last year dropped by 19 students from the previous year to 893, but that only worsened when the final spring count declined to 875. That’s the number administrators chose to go with to make spending projections for the current school year.
If the decline of three students holds, Morenci will lose about $23,000 in state funding.
The average number of students in each grade, kindergarten through 12, stands at 65 students, down from 66 a year ago.
