2011.09.08 Tina Jones: Change in the classroom
Change in the Classroom
On Monday, Sept. 12, all Fulton County teachers will participate in a professional development day to be hosted by Wauseon Schools. Students will have the day off as their teachers return as students themselves to become better acquainted with changes coming to their classrooms.
A key factor for improvements and continued success in the seven Fulton County school districts that allows them to consistently achieve Excellent status is a commitment to quality professional development that supports teachers in meeting the diverse needs of the students they teach.
Willard R. Daggett, Ed.D., CEO of the International Center for Leadership in Education, recognized worldwide for his proven ability to move education systems towards more rigorous and relevant skills and knowledge for all students, will be the keynote speaker.
Over the next three years, teachers in 43 states will be transitioning to national standards called the Common Core State Standards in English, language arts and mathematics. Several key goals of the Common Core State Standards are to graduate students that are fully prepared to meet the demands of college or careers and to prepare students to compete in the global marketplace. With this in mind Dr. Daggett’s focus for the day will be “Preparing Students for their Future: Opportunities and Challenges (e.g. Preparing students for CCSS, New Generation of Tests, and Life).”
Dr. Daggett will answer three critical questions about the need for change and reform: Why Change? His answer will include evidence from Brain Research and the demands of 21st Century Skills; What Change? The importance of relevance and rigor will be stressed; What do I, the teacher, need to do? He will also discuss the educational role of technology, the impact of its rate of change, an explanation of why core teaching is not enough and why we can’t just focus on the test.
The governor, Ohio Department of Education and Race to the Top leaders are encouraging districts to join forces to improve the quality of education for all students in Ohio while looking at cost savings wherever possible. Collaboration between districts allows all districts to enjoy a nationally recognized speaker at a substantial savings.
