2010.11.10 Sybil Diccion: Seeking president's death?
Not so long ago, I was afforded the opportunity to visit a FaceBook website as a guest. Since I’m not an FB subscriber, I really don’t know how the whole idea works, but I caught on enough to be able to view numerous photos of familiar faces on their personal pages. I was even able to view some of the books they have read, movies they’ve seen, or musical artists who appeal to them.
After spending a bit of time going from photo to photo of people I recognized, I happened to come across a comment that seriously disturbed me—one that truly stopped me in my tracks. Upon further investigation, I noticed the very same comment on several of the other pages and decided to make note of those to whom the following was attached. Here is what I read:
Dear Lord, This year you took my favorite actor, Patrick Swayze. You took my favorite actress, Farah Fawcett. You took my favorite singer, Michael Jackson. I just wanted to let you know, my favorite president is Barack Obama. Amen.
What really took me by surprise, however, were the names of the individuals who posted the above comment on their personal page. I had always known them by their gentleness, their sweet and smiling faces, and a respect for others. I also knew them for their Christian fervor.
Thus, while listening to a sermon yesterday that asked, “What is a Christian?”, I was reminded of that prayer that prayed for Obama’s death. I thought to myself that maybe I’m the one who has it all wrong because in all my years of living, I never thought of Christ wishing death upon someone. So if that is one of the qualifications, then I guess I’ll just have to drop out of the club. It seems a bit too extreme for me.
