I don't know whether to say Morenci city council has shot the town in the foot or cut off its nose to spite its face.
As we’ve all found out now, word travels fast amongst the softball teams. Maybe Mr. Ford didn’t make an arbitrary decision to move things to Fayette. Maybe he heard from team managers that they would rather go where they can cool off with a beverage of their choice. It takes softball teams to make a tournament and if they choose not to participate, then the tournament falls apart.
Without the softball tournament we have no friends and family of ball players coming into town. That means no sales at the stores and gas stations of beer, pop, ice, bread, lunch meat, chips and bottled water. No subs from the Deli. No breakfasts, lunches and dinners from the Village Inn or the Pub. Fewer people downtown taking part in the festivities and watching the parade. Fewer reasons for vendors to set up a booth in the park. Less reason for people like me to go to the park. It can snowball from there and a struggling festival can die. I’m not saying that losing the tournament will kill the festival, but it sure will deal the town’s economy a blow.
My father managed a softball team for a lot of years and I went to a lot of games in a lot of different towns. Never once did I see a drunken brawl. I can’t remember seeing anyone even tipsy. A hung-over ball player can’t play as good and might be the reason for a loss. Ball players don't like to lose. They do like to have a refreshing beverage after spending over an hour out in the sun. For some that means pop or water and for some that means a beer.
Let’s try banning bottled water since those bottles are not refundable and who hasn’t seen a water bottle lying around the streets and yards of town. That could cut the amount of trash going to landfills and raise revenue for the city through increased water usage as people fill their bottles from the taps in their kitchens and take those bottles back home at the end of the day.
