The “grandparents scam” that was written about in the Aug. 8 Observer is alive and well in Morenci.
A local couple received a call recently from someone claiming to be their son. The caller said he had been injured in a car accident while on vacation in another country and money was needed for hospital costs.
The woman answering the call had doubts about its legitimacy and said she would have to talk it over with her husband. She never heard back from the caller.
In a typical situation, the caller doesn’t state his or her name and instead waits for the subject to ask something like, “George, is that you?” After that the caller pretends to be the son named George.
