Pat Houttekier has lived on State Line Road west of Morenci for more than 40 years and a good share of that time she’s had to drive past an overgrown patch of ground on her way home.
“There is an island of grass on the corner of my road and Gorham Street. For over 30 years this has been overgrown and filled with trash that people just toss in, including tires,” she said.
She drove by one day several years ago to find that it was cleaned up and mowed, and it’s remained that way ever since. It’s been a mystery to her who was doing the work to keep it attractive.
“I recently found out that a gentleman from Gorham Street named Ron Shaffer has taken it upon himself to do this. Right now there is a row of flags planted there,” she said. “It really shows what a change one person can make. Mr. Shaffer’s public service is impressive and appreciated by all of us who drive by that intersection regularly.”
