2012.05.23 Correspondence: old Main Street building

The building at 221 W. Main Street in Morenci had many uses over the years before it was demolished last week. We mentioned DeLaire Peltz’s office for his Standard Oil distributorship and his wife’s flower shop. In more recent years it was the home of Wes Clark’s hair salon.

Bob Price stopped in the office last week to point out that Tom Davis had his shoeshine shop in that location, but Jack Sampson isn’t so sure. He remembers the Davis building located where the dentist office now stands. Jack visited frequently when he was a paper boy.

Jan Sampson remembers a clothing store in the old building. As a teenager, she worked at a store called Morel’s Clothing owned by a couple from Delta, Ohio, she thinks. Before that, she said, Betty Moine and another woman owned a shop that sold clothing, jewelry, handbags and other items.
