2009.06.24 Wayne and Verna Williams: Fayette council vote

Written by David Green.

Fayette council recently voted against a proposed nine percent increase in the village water and sewer fees.

We disagree with this decision. Taking money from the cash reserves will not leave enough funding for necessary maintenance of village streets, repair of water main breaks and maintenance of the water plant. It is important to keep the water plant in good working order. If not, it will lead to costly repair. Sooner or later who will pay for these necessary repairs?

With a budget in the red, it will only continue to get worse, and then who will want to pay the increasing costs?

If property owners are using the water, then they should be the ones to pay their share. This cost should not be handed over to someone else. Why should one family pay their water bill and then be asked to pay a sales tax to help pay for someone else’s water bill?

There is nothing in life that is free.
