This week’s cover photo is the leading candidate for Most Unusual Photo of the Summer. This week’s print edition is a little odd because we finished three minutes before deadline. Very much a rarity. Here are the highlights:
• Morenci city council’s support of the police department move to the vacant NWD building at the back of Wakefield Park turned soft Monday night. Council has already OKd the move, but they weren’t willing to approve an engineering study to turn the building into a secure police station.
• It’s been a week since the house fire fatalities on Pearl Street. We finally have our turn to report on the tragedy.
• Zeroes Aren’t Permitted. Morenci Area High School is joining in with those districts that use the ZAP program to deal with homework problems.
• Used tires can be taken to the Seneca Township Hall Saturday morning for disposal. $2 for car tires.
• Two public hearings are scheduled Monday in Morenci for zoning issues: converting the Charles Fay senior facility into a doctor’s office and senior center; allowing a one-chair salon in a residence on Main Street.
• Rich Foley writes about how to create a clunker; David Green retells his misadventure at a mall. The editorial is critical of the criticism leveled on the fire department.
• The annual Center for Excellence ag field day in Lenawee County is scheduled Aug. 19.
• Fayette’s second annual Music Fest is scheduled Saturday evening.
• The filing deadline for candidates in Fulton County is Aug. 20. There are still a lot of empty slots in village, school and township offices.
• School starts next Wednesday in Fayette while in Michigan, state law says to wait until after Labor Day.
