WISHING TREE—Volunteers met at the former N.W.D. building last Wednesday to sort toys, clothing and other gifts for the Morenci Kiwanis Club’s annual Wishing Tree project. Area residents picked stars off a Wishing Tree, with each star representing the Christmas wishes of an area child whose family needed a little extra help this season. More than 200 stars were placed on trees this year. From the left, Kay Dickerson, Rosemary Dickerson and Gail Johnson sort through 60 feet of gifts.

Take a look at the crayon drawings on the back of this week’s print edition. You can almost get a little Crayola under the fingernail. Those drawings accompany some thoughts by first grade students about what they would like to give to the world for a present.

In this week’s edition, you’ll read about this:

  • Fayette’s library is moving forward with plans to seek a levy.
  • Consumer Energy trucks will be in Morenci next year to complete the upgrade of the main electrical line into town. The move will improve reliability.
  • Morenci’s recycling center now accepts computers, printers and related items.
  • Colleen Leddy brings back an old column from 1998 and David Green wonders why he’s smelling cigarette smoke.
  • Fayette is seeking financial assistance to complete its sewer projects.
  • Tom Valentine of Morenci recalls the day he was left behind in a small French town during World War II.
  • The Morenc sixth grade band is in need of some used intruments, if you have a spare clarinet in the closet. Lots of kids decided to give band a try.
  • Those are a few of the highlights. Get a copy or sign up on-line for a PDF download.
