The Glassmen are coming

Sunday is Family Day for the members of the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps, and Morenci area residents are invited to join the Glassmen family for a day. The Toledo-based group uses Morenci school facilities, as well as some city streets, for practice sessions leading up to summer competition. A preview performance is scheduled before the group embarks on its travels and gives the families of band members the opportunity to watch a performance.

Executive director Brian Hickman invites the community to take a seat in the high school bleachers, as well—the corps’ way of saying thanks for putting up with their noise over recent weeks.

Janet Ankenbrandt, the Glassman office manager, describes the 4 p.m. performance Sunday as enter“train”ment. The event provides the audience with a show, but it also serves as an important part of the corps’ preparation—their first opportunity to perform before an audience.

The program will start off with a demonstration of how the group prepares before a performance, then the members will rush off to get dressed in their outfits.

Next they will perform a preview of their 2010 summer routine—the routine as it stands now. Refinements are made throughout the summer as the group travels around the country competing.
There is no charge for the hour-long presentation, but donations will be accepted.

And save room for dessert. The Glassmen will sell slices of fresh-baked pie as a fund-raiser.

5-K run planned
The members of the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps need one final workout before heading out for the 2010 tour so they’ve organized a 5K Run for the Corps. All area runners are invited to take part in the run scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.
Awards will be given in 12 age groups and participants will receive a t-shirt while supplies last. The race begins at Morenci Area High School.

The Glassmen food trailer will serve a free pancake breakfast to participants.
A one-kilometer fun run/walk is also planned for half price and children can enter free with a paid adult. T-shirts will not be given.
