Silver is the choice

I just heard that silver is the most popular color of vehicles in the U.S. – for the ninth year in a row. I haven’t even owned a silver bicycle.

I think I’ve mentioned the Anthropocene before. That’s the new word coined by Paul Crutzen a few years back to describe the Earth’s next epoch, the one influenced by the rise of homo sapien. That’s a fairly recent part of history as geological time goes.

New Scientist takes a look at what might be ahead by looking at the past. Will the Earth survive us?

Whether our species would survive is hard to predict, but what of the fate of the Earth itself? It is often said that when we talk about “saving the planet” we are really talking about saving ourselves: the planet will be just fine without us. But would it? Or would an end-Anthropocene cataclysm damage it so badly that it becomes a sterile wasteland?
